We carried out a major resurfacing project on the A55 trunk road between Llanddulas and Pensarn in North Wales. It brought the last remaining section of the road up to current dual carriageway standards.
A hardened central reserve was created; improve drainage and additional communication ducting added. The whole carriageway construction was replaced and finished with a thin coat of SMA surfacing course, which reduces road noise and improves surface drainage.
Extensive “soft-spots” were found under the existing carriageway, which extended the contract into the period of heavy summer traffic. Careful traffic management allowed two lanes to be maintained on both the east and west bound carriageways preventing any serious traffic congestion.
The contract value was £3.9m and the client was the Welsh Assembly Government.
